Show Manager's Report

"With a fabulous entry of 32 dogs and 56 bitches for the attention of our judge Allard Boessenkool and reasonably good weather for once, the fourth SNC open show was off to a flying start. The atmosphere, as we have come to expect at all newfie shows, was relaxed and friendly with genuine good sportsmanship displayed to all the class winners and placings. As usual, ring management was ably conducted by Hedd Richards with sterling work in all departments from stewards, to car park stewards, and committee members all ensuring that the show ran smoothly.

The lunch interval was filled with activity. For the first time there were junior handling classes judged by George Harrison. Nicole Owles in the 6-11 years class made the handling of a Newfie appear effortless and with such a professional edge … it was a good chance for us all to watch and learn. From a different angle David Lamb gave an impressive demonstration of dancing to music with 3 of his dogs, which whilst hugely entertaining made many of us go home and attempt the same with our own dogs …….which probably, like New Year’s resolutions only lasted about 2 days before conceding defeat and realising that it is much harder than it looks, especially with a Newf!

Unfortunately time got the better of us during the interval and so the absolutely stunning piece of glassware, kindly donated by Marissa Jeffries, was not auctioned as planned. This beautiful bowl depicted Christmas scenes and would truly be an asset to anyones Newfie collection. Watch out during the year for news on how to win this spectacular bowl. Thank you Marissa for your generous donation.

There were a few competition winners announced on the day. Paul Dodd received £20 in the Doggie draw for his entry with Sandbears Go with Flo, whilst in the President’s Prize for novice handlers winning a first place, there was success from the puppy bitch class and that was Karen Hewson handling Shalowseas Elsie Tanner. There was another kind donation from Gary Cockerill and Kirstie Forster which was for a 'name the Meerkat' competition. The proud owner of a Meerkat toy is Chris Bristow with the winning name of 'Leonardo'.

So finally all honours given out, winners declared, it brought to a close a very successful open show. A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who made it such a great day, especially to those who entered their lovely dogs because that's the reason we do it. A gentle reminder of a date for the diary. Next year's show is slightly earlier on November 23rd 2013 when the weather will be positively tropical compared to what we normally expect at the show and our judge will be Kevin Young (Sunkap). Hope you all have a successful and happy year with your Newfies and look forward to seeing you at the next Open Show."
