Water Tests - All Levels (Sections A to E)

18th & 19th May 2024
Grangewaters Activity Centre, South Ockendon, Essex
Hosted by Grangewaters Working Newfoundlands

May 2024 has proven to be a busy month of Water Tests, following only two weeks after the NNC Rother Water Test at Lincoln, and a week before the NNC Water Test at Manvers, we were delighted that we still managed to achieve 47 test entries.

The season has started quite slowly for training - a cold and very wet Spring had kept conditions chilly and wet, but for our weekend the weather gods smiled upon us with very favourable conditions, remaining calm, dry, and sunny all weekend.

With 26 entries to test on the Saturday, I made the decision to run both swims, whilst on the Sunday we scaled down to just the one swim which with a prompt start I calculated we could get through the 21 D and B tests.

We welcomed guests from NewForest, Terranova, WNAG, Rother, and SEWN many of whom enjoyed the comfort of our Luxury Lakeside Lodges for the weekend, they were all put to good use with plenty of stewarding duties. Many thanks for all of your help.

At Section A - we had 13 entries, all but one passed.

At Section B - the pass rate was 30% - with five passes from the 15 entries. Well done to Sally Bull with Martha, James Rogers with Teddy, Helen Gray with Rufus, Cathy Martin with Twiggy, and Jeff Burridge with Henry.

At Section C - the pass rate was almost 30% - with three passes from the 11 entries. Well done to Jay Rhodes with Mike, Jan and Graham Hill with Wilma, and Sue and Keith Dobson with Kyra.

At Section D - we had two terrific passes from the six entries - congratulations to Clive Haylock with Georgia, and to Jan and Graham Hill with Wilma.

At Section E - unfortunately neither of our two entries passed on this occasion.

To our Judges, the stewards, our entrants, and those guests who came along to observe, thank-you for your support over the weekend, and we hope to see you all again next year.

Alan Godden, Test Manager

Thank you to SNC for inviting us to judge today. We had 13 entries in total today with 12 very good passes and one young dog who will definitely get there.

The sun put in an appearance, making judging a very pleasurable experience. Huge thanks to Alan Godden (Test Manager) and team Grangewaters for their hospitality. Thank you to our stewards who did a sterling job, especially at distracting the wildlife.

Thankyou SNC for asking us to judge at Grangewaters. It was a pleasant day with calm waters.

We judged 11 dogs today with only three passes. The main stumbling block was exiting the boat in time or the controlled swim!

With a lot more encouragement and practice we are sure you will all achieve this level.

Section E

Judges: Clive Haylock & Sue Sanders
Entrants: 2 | Passes: 0

We had two entries this morning for Section E and the conditions were ideal. Both dogs had been working for this pass previously, but unfortunately we did not have any passes today.

We did see some very nice exercises completed without loss of points & hopefully that elusive pass will come in the near future - it is just a matter of everything coming together on the day.

We would like to thank the Test Manager Alan Godden, all the members of Grangewaters for their hospitality and all our stewards for their valuable help.

Thank you SNC for inviting us to judge at this test. We had 15 entries, of whom seven passed but there were some near misses in those who didn't quite make the grade. Some passes were novice dogs who had only passed A for the first time yesterday.

Thankyou Grangewaters Working Newfoundlands for hosting the test and for arranging the glorious weather.

We had six entries this morning for Section D, the weather was lovely - sunny and warm. We had two excellent passes – both first time passes at this level and a joy to judge, one team was a young dog & the other a non-newf.

Once again the D1 exercise proved most problematic for the other entrants - coil for coil exchange in training, may be helpful until test day, as it appears to be regarded by the dogs as a very high value item. We are most grateful to the Test Manager, Alan Godden, and the team from Grangewaters for hosting the tests and to all our stewards.

It is still early in the water season, so we wish all the teams good luck and success in the forthcoming months.
