Show Manager's Report
Well, what a year 2009 turned out to be for the Southern Newfoundland Club, KC recognition at the start and its first Open Show at the end – fabulous.
Setting up the show began on Friday evening after a day of dreadful weather. At least our judges, Irene Donne and Eivor Hofmandselv, had landed safely if somewhat delayed. All sorts of prayers were said
to the weather gods but overnight more snow, typical. This did influence the entries somewhat but Newfie owners, like their dogs, are built of strong, stubborn stuff and many members arrived having battled
through all sorts of weather. So a huge thank you to all the entries for your support. Thanks are also due to the stall holders who offered a wide variety of quality goods during the day.
The atmosphere was brilliant as start time approached. The opening of the show saw 2 cart pulling Newfies leading in Hedd Richards who was escorting our judges to their ring. A nice touch to acknowledge
the working aspects of the Newfoundland – a great idea Sandra Constable, well done. Judging of the classes went smoothly with Hedd conducting proceedings. A break for lunch during which time there was
free mince pies and a wicked non-alcoholic mulled wine produced by the caterers who were great. In the interval Hedd held one of his famous auctions with some ingenious lot items raising over £400 for
Welfare. Lunch over, judging continued with many people staying to see the climax of the show, despite weather warnings. The judges were unanimous in their decision for the major awards which meant that
the services of Referee Esther Denham were not required. Hope that you enjoyed your day Esther and thank you for attending.
Sponsorship for the show was provided by Royal Canin, Yumega and Red Cape.
A huge thank you to Irene and Eivor, the judges, for making this a wonderful first show and Stewards Jan Groves, Suzie Raymond, Lucinda Burgess and Steve Walker for making things go smoothly in the rings.
The Committee worked fiendishly hard ably assisted by Ian Hutchinson, Cheryl Hobbs, Sandra Land and Diane Vincent.
I would personally like to thank Geoff Burns for nobly taking on car parking duties in sub zero temperatures and Paul Dodd for pictures and results on the web site. Lastly a HUGE thank you for the people
who turned up on the day and made it the success it was. You provided an enjoyable atmosphere whilst supporting all competitors which made this such a memorable first show.
Thank you everyone and "Happy Christmas".

Dog Judge's Report
It really was a great honour to be one of the first two judges to be invited to judge this specialty show of the club. It was a beautiful venue, ideal for a dog show and a very well organised
show in every way and I want to thank the club for looking after me. And a special thanks to Hutch for her hospitality after the show.
I am very happy for all those that entered under me and I want to thank the exhibitors for bringing their dogs. With my great Christmas spirit and atmosphere I judged the dogs with my heart.
First and most important was that the dogs were all of excellent temperament. I found only very good handlers and I find it is so much easier to judge the dogs when they are well handled.
I was very pleased with the five males in my final line up and was very happy to find the type of Newfoundlands that I wanted who were all in excellent condition, with beautiful coats and
well prepared for a grand show.
My eventual winner of Best Dog in Show who went on with the full agreement of my co-judge to win Best in Show is a true Newfoundland inside and out. He is beautiful, sound and in an excellent
show condition. My reserve dog was in hard competition with the three others in my final line up and won his place because of his young and fresh attitude and I think he will have a promising and very
exciting future ahead of him. I would also like to congratulate the winner of Best Bitch in Show who is his litter sister – she is a little diamond and another star for the future.

Bitch Judge's Report
It was a great honour to be invited to judge at this special show. It was my first time judging British Newfoundlands although I have attended some shows in the UK so the different system of judging did not cause me any problems.
I was delighted to have so many entries - it was a shame that the weather was not on our side and some people failed to get to the show.
I found the bitches well presented and the handlers polite and competent. The final line up of my winners was very pleasing and I would be happy to take some of them home with me!
Irene, my co-judge, and I agreed on the BIS and BPIS awards, but many thanks to Esther Denham for being there to referee if that had been necessary.
Thanks, also to the club committee for looking after us so well and having such a good venue for a show.
